Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Fans

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Owner Penalties

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Offseason Controversies and Public Spotlight

The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their position or financial standing.
