Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty
The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
