Shifting from Praise to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein Document Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no new data.
