Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
