The former Brazilian president arrested after being considered a flight risk
Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
