The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog Following Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "severe" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the capital recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the recommended limit set by the global health authority.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times higher than safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Developments

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that blankets the metropolis as winter begins.

However recently, the current city administration approached the judicial authority to seek a easing of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Decision and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated periods throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Several air quality sensors throughout the city showed contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst levels recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.

International Implications

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also sparked a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening air quality in Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the events.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in the city have remained as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the amount of hazardous particles in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air descends.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be causing 10,000 early mortalities annually in Delhi.
