During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
